Joe Davis Ballenger Memorial Nursing Scholarships

VBLF Scholarship Application

There are 2 Nursing Scholarships Available – one is for Licensed Vocational Nursing Graduates and the other for Graduates of an Associates in Nursing Degree :

For LVN Graduates:

 JOE DAVIS BALLENGER (1915 – 1997) was a well-known and well-respected native of the Rio Grande Valley.  He was active in a number of civic and community affairs and he served faithfully on the Board of Trustees and Honorary Advisory Board of Valley Baptist Medical Center for more than 30 years.  His gifts of time and resources to Valley Baptist Medical Center contributed significantly to the high-quality medical care offered to the Valley community.  Mr. Ballenger continued the legacy of service to Valley Baptist set forth by his father, Joe G. Ballenger, who also served Valley Baptist in its early beginnings.

Purpose:

The Joe Davis Ballenger Nursing Scholarship was established in his memory by Joe Charles and Rebecca Ballenger.  Mr. and Mrs. Ballenger have been active supporters of Valley Baptist Medical Center and healthcare education for many years.  A scholarship in the amount of $500.00 is awarded to a graduate of a qualified school of vocational nursing in Cameron County. It is the purpose of the scholarship to assist the recipient in establishing himself/herself in nursing practice in a hospital in Cameron County and to encourage the recipient to continue his/her education by entering into a program in preparation for becoming a registered nurse.

Criteria for Eligibility:

To be eligible for the Joe Davis Ballenger Memorial Nursing Grant, the successful candidate shall:

  1. Be a graduate of a qualified School of Vocational Nursing in Cameron County.
  2. Have successfully completed the licensure examination of the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners.
  3. Have articulated a need for the scholarship and intent to enter into a program in preparation for becoming a registered nurse.

Selection of Scholarship Recipient:

 The scholarship recipient will be selected by a committee established for that purpose by the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation.  The committee will consider the eligibility items set forth for the scholarship.  In case of two or more applicants with close eligibility criteria, the committee may consider the following items when making a determination:

1)      the applicants’ overall grade point average; and

2)     the date on which the applicant successfully completed the licensure examination of the Texas Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners.

 FOR ADN Graduates:

Purpose:

The Joe Davis Ballenger Nursing Scholarship was established in his memory by Joe Charles and Rebecca Ballenger.  Mr. and Mrs. Ballenger have been active supporters of Valley Baptist Medical Center and healthcare education for many years.  A scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 is awarded to a graduate of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at an accredited college or university in Cameron, Willacy or Hidalgo County.  It is the purpose of the scholarship to assist the recipient in establishing himself/herself in nursing practice at a hospital in Cameron County and to encourage the recipient to continue his/her education through the pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree.

Criteria for Eligibility:

To be eligible for the Joe Davis Ballenger Memorial Nursing Scholarship, the successful candidate shall:

1.  Be a graduate of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program from an accredited college or university in Cameron, Willacy or Hidalgo County.

2.  Have successfully completed the licensure examination of the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.

3.  Have articulated a need for the scholarship and the intent to continue with an education program leading to a Bachelor’s Degree.
