Valley Health Care Network Nursing Scholarship

VBLF Scholarship Application

Information and Guidelines

 PURPOSE

In January, 2001, the Valley Health Care Network Board of Directors established the VALLEY HEALTH CARE NETWORK SCHOLARSHIP FUND primarily to assist individuals in financial need with some of the costs involved in pursuing a License in Vocational Nursing, an Associate degree in Nursing, or an Advanced degree in Nursing.

 FUND ADMINISTRATION

 The scholarship is administered by The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation.  The selection is made by the Education Committee of the Valley Health Care Network Board of Directors with final approval by the Valley Health Care Network Board of Directors.

 ELIGIBILITY

 LVN nursing students must be enrolled in  an accredited LVN Program in Cameron, Willacy or Hidalgo County.

 Associate Degree nursing students must be enrolled in a nursing curriculum at  an accredited college or university in Cameron, Willacy or Hidalgo County and must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA.

 Advanced degree nursing students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours in an advanced degree nursing curriculum (Bachelors or Masters) through an accredited university in Cameron, Willacy or Hidalgo County, or residing in one of those counties while obtaining an online degree.  They must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

 APPLICATION & AWARD PROCESS

–          Applications are available from the Valley Baptist  Legacy Foundation.  Please obtain from www.vblf.org or call 956.335-3040 for more information.

–          Applications are processed by Valley Baptist  Legacy Foundation and presented to the Education Committee of the Valley Health Care Network Board for selection.

–          The Education committee considers the information expressed in the essay as selection criteria.

–          In case of two or more applicants with close eligibility criteria, the committee may consider the following items when making a determination:

            –the applicant’s apparent financial need;

            –the applicant’s overall grade point average

–          Upon recommendation from the Education Committee, the Valley Health Care Network Board of Directors will approve the final selection of applicants.

–          If the selected recipient fails to complete the course of study for the period that the scholarship covers, the VHCN Board of Directors may choose to award the 2nd half of the scholarship to an alternate recipient.

 LVN Scholarship ($500)

–          Scholarships will be awarded to selected eligible applicants enrolled in an eligible School of Vocational Nursing.

–          Applications are available from The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation.

–          Application must be submitted to The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation with required documentation by a date to be announced.

–          The award selection will take place by April 10 of each year.  An amount of $250 will be advanced to the recipient at the beginning of the second half of the Vocational Nursing course curriculum.  The remaining $250 will be awarded to the recipient upon graduation from the program.

 Associate Degree in Nursing ($1,000)

–          This scholarship will be awarded to two selected eligible applicants enrolled in either the first or second year of  A.D.N. Nursing classes.

–          The scholarships will offer assistance for fall and spring semesters only.

–          The award selection will take place in August and $500 will be advanced to the recipient at the beginning of the fall semester.

–          The recipient must have an overall 2.5 GPA at the end of the fall semester to be eligible for an additional $500 for the spring semester.

Advanced Degree in Nursing ($1,000)  

–          This scholarship will be awarded to two selected eligible applicants enrolled in an advanced degree nursing curriculum (Bachelors or Masters levels).

–          The scholarships will offer assistance for fall and Spring semesters only.

–          $500 will be awarded to each recipient at the beginning of the fall semester.

–          Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better on a course load of at least (6) semester hours in order to receive another $500 for the spring semester.

–          Completion of the spring semester with a 3.0 GPA or better on a course load of at least (6) semester hours, makes the recipient eligible to apply for the scholarship the following academic year.
